Basic Firearm Components

  • Action: The mechanism that loads, fires, and ejects ammunition
  • Magazine: Detachable device that holds and feeds ammunition
  • Receiver: The main component that houses the operating parts (particularly important for AR builds)
  • Barrel: The tube through which the bullet travels
  • Stock: The portion that allows the shooter to hold and stabilize the firearm

AR-Specific Terminology

  • Upper Receiver: Houses the barrel and bolt carrier group
  • Lower Receiver: Contains the fire control group and buffer system
  • Buffer System: Reduces recoil and cycles the action
  • Handguard: Protects hands from barrel heat, provides attachment points
  • Gas System: Directs gas to cycle the action (Direct Impingement or Piston-Driven)
