Basic Firearm Components
- Action: The mechanism that loads, fires, and ejects ammunition
- Magazine: Detachable device that holds and feeds ammunition
- Receiver: The main component that houses the operating parts (particularly important for AR builds)
- Barrel: The tube through which the bullet travels
- Stock: The portion that allows the shooter to hold and stabilize the firearm
AR-Specific Terminology
- Upper Receiver: Houses the barrel and bolt carrier group
- Lower Receiver: Contains the fire control group and buffer system
- Buffer System: Reduces recoil and cycles the action
- Handguard: Protects hands from barrel heat, provides attachment points
- Gas System: Directs gas to cycle the action (Direct Impingement or Piston-Driven)
